TODAY’S MEDITATION – “You expected much, but it turned out to be little?” (Haggai 1:5-11)

This passage stresses the fact that God wants to be Number One on our list of priorities, in all the domains of our lives. My brother, my sister, truly, what can you do to draw God’s attention that Jesus has not done yet? There is no sacrifice you can give God that could be greater than Jesus’; there is nothing you can do that could be greater than what Jesus did. Yet, for you to get full access to God’s favour and blessings, He is asking you for one thing: put Him first in your life. What does it mean? You have a project you want to carry out, approach the Lord first with it and ask for His guidance, for the Bible says: “Many are the plans in a person’s heart, but it is the LORD’s purpose that prevails” (Proverbs 19:22); you are looking for restoration in any part of your life: “God, your God, will restore everything you lost; he’ll have compassion on you; he’ll come back and pick up the pieces from all the places where you were scattered. No matter how far away you end up, God, your God, will get you out of there” (Deuteronomy 30:3-4). You want a good health or a breakthrough in your business or finances, it is simple: “Dear friend, I pray that you may enjoy good health and that all may go well with you, even as your soul is getting along well” (3 John 1:2)… My friend, all the promises of God are at hand’s reach, as long as you put Him first. However, also know that lacking to put Him first could result in drought in your life as God Himself can send it. Let’s read today’s passage to understand it: 5 Now this is what the Lord Almighty says: “Give careful thought to your ways. 6 You have planted much, but harvested little. You eat, but never have enough. You drink, but never have your fill. You put on clothes, but are not warm. You earn wages, only to put them in a purse with holes in it.”7 This is what the Lord Almighty says: “Give careful thought to your ways. 8 Go up into the mountains and bring down timber and build my house, so that I may take pleasure in it and be honored,” says the Lord. 9 “You expected much, but see, it turned out to be little. What you brought home, I blew away. Why?” declares the Lord Almighty. “Because of my house, which remains a ruin, while each of you is busy with your own house. 10 Therefore, because of you the heavens have withheld their dew and the earth its crops. 11 I called for a drought on the fields and the mountains, on the grain, the new wine, the olive oil and everything else the ground produces, on people and livestock, and on all the labor of your hands.” My friends, what is most important to you? Where is God on your list of priorities? Moses predicted to the people of Israel that God was going to bring drought and destroy their belongings if they neglected God (Deuteronomy 28:38-45), but they took that warning lightly, just like many Christians today (they think they can walk their Christian life without going to church, on their own terms, etc…). If this meditation touches you today, the Lord may be warning you not to neglect Him, His principles or His church, for the Bible says “A curse on anyone who is lax in doing the Lord’s work!” (Jeremiah 48:10). Put God first in all the areas of your life, obey Him and remain faithful to the end, then you shall enjoy His favour throughout your life, as David said “I was young and now I am old, yet I have never seen the righteous forsaken or their children begging bread” (Psalm 37:25).
