TODAY’S MEDITATION – The fear of God will keep you away from sin (Psalm 36:1-4)

My brother, my sister, because the wicked have no fear of God, nothing restrains them from sinning or doing evil: they plunge ahead as if nothing will happen to them. But God is just and is only delaying their judgement. As for us who already believe in Him and in Christ, we should learn to hold back from sinning, because we are no longer under the weight of sin in Christ, because He carried all the sins for us. However, we should let the fear of God do its work in us to keep us from sin. The main problem with today’s Christianity is that many people tend to forget that God’s love and mercy, in other words, God’s grace, does not exclude His justice.

Many believers are still fighting with sin. Today’s passage tells us this: “I have a message from God in my heart concerning the sinfulness of the wicked: There is no fear of God before their eyes. In their own eyes they flatter themselves too much to detect or hate their sin. The words of their mouths are wicked and deceitful; they fail to act wisely or do good. Even on their beds they plot evil; they commit themselves to a sinful course and do not reject what is wrong.”

Today, let’s learn that the fear of the Lord is not a mere respect or reverence to God (as many do the same for their employer). My friend, the fear of God is essential in our walk with Christ. Look up to the Lord Jesus to learn to fear God as He is the perfect example of this fear and He warned us repeatedly to fear God, not men. He spoke lovingly but frankly to all and didn’t mince words when people needed to face their sin and repent. But He also demonstrated love beyond human understanding when he lived out his words, “There is no greater love than to lay down one’s life for one’s friends (John 15:13).” With love like that, what is left to fear but God? Stay blessed in Jesus’ name.
