One thing we don’t like to happen in our lives is being separated from our loved ones. Lot was the nephew of Abraham and enjoyed the same blessings as his uncle: “Lot, who was moving about with Abram, also had flocks and herds and tents. But the land could not support them while they stayed together, for their possessions were so great that they were not able to stay together” (verses 5-6). My brother, my sister, God cannot bless you the way He wants while Lot is still around you, therefore He will allow your separation: ” And quarreling arose between Abram’s herders and Lot’s” (verse 7). This will lead to Abram’s proposal to part from his nephew, which was very unselfish since he told Lot to choose first whatever land he wanted: “If you go to the left, I’ll go to the right; if you go to the right, I’ll go to the left.” (verses 8-9). Now, Lot’s response revealed his true character as he only thought about himself without any tinge of conscience for his uncle: “Lot looked around and saw that the whole plain of the Jordan toward Zoar was well watered… So Lot chose for himself the whole plain of the Jordan and set out toward the east” (verses 10-11). Yes, my friend, the problem with Lot is that, no matter how long he has known the Lord, Lot’s faith is based on his external observation, his own assessment and his ability… and that led him even to ignore the Lord’s warning not to go near Sodom until he got caught up in troubles! You see, the truth about Lot is that he has actually not abandoned his life of faith. Yet, he can compromise in his heart and ended up being tormented (2 Peter 2:8). On the other side, Abraham who ignored his right as the eldest of both, trusted God for his blessings. He was naturally discouraged to be separated from his nephew who was like a his own son. But, because of his wise decision and deep trust in the Lord, God told Him: “Look around from where you are, to the north and south, to the east and west.” (verse 14). My friend, God knows the love you have for Lot. But He also knows where Lot’s unfaithful and unmerciful heart could lead both of you… Once Lot was gone, God promised to give Abraham numerous descendants like the dust of the earth, and He did! And not only that: Abraham’s riches kept multiplying while Lot was sinking into troubles, so much that Abraham had to go and rescue him (Genesis 14)! God is faithful, trust in Him and let Lot go!
