TODAY’S MEDITATION – Keep your lamp burning (Matthew 26:40-41)

Prayer, prayer, prayer! My brother, my sister, if you want to overcome temptation in your life, there is no other way: keep alert and pray without ceasing! Here, Jesus uses Peter’s drowsiness to warn him about the kinds of temptation he was soon to face. We too, because we are living in a fallen world, are facing temptation every single day. Keeping alert means being spiritually equipped to fight it, and also being aware of the possibilities of temptation. You know, Satan will always tempt you only where you are most vulnerable. He spends lots of hours studying us, my friends, just to be able to find that little thing that can enable him to strike us down. You don’t need to study his nasty tactics, because when you have a true life of prayer, the Lord will give you His strength and the means to help you defeat the enemy. Why is it common to hear believers say they have fallen into the temptation of Satan, as the Bible states that “No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted[b] beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it” (1 Corinthians 10:13)? Because they cannot resist it. Why? Because their spiritual lamps is not burning! Yes, my friend, the Bible says: “Be dressed ready for service and keep your lamps burning” (Luke 12:35). Our lamps should remain burning while waiting for the Lord to return, but also to enable us to discern the attacks or temptation of the enemy. And there is no way we can have them burning if we don’t seriously go back to the source (Jesus) where we can find the oil that will enable them to keep burning. Stay blessed in Jesus’ name.
