This is what today’s passage says: “Again, truly I tell you that if two of you on earth agree about anything they ask for, it will be done for them by my Father in heaven. For where two or three gather in my name, there am I with them.”
Here, Jesus is teaching His disciples more about the principles of heaven. My brother, my sister, we are all parts of the body of believers (the Church). Yet, we do not always agree in what to ask our Lord, the Head of this body, and that is the reason why we do not see His promises fulfilled in our lives. In this passage, Jesus is telling us that the agreement of two in prayer is more powerful than the superficial agreement of thousands because His Holy Spirit can only be with sincere believers! Yes, two or more believers who are filled with the Holy Spirit can ONLY pray according to God’s will, not their own! Thus their requests will be granted. So, we should understand that our agreement is more spiritual than physically saying “let’s agree to pray about this or that”. Let’s clarify this.
Very often, when people want a prayer of agreement, they look for one or more partners. They just start praying without checking the validity of the prayer request before the Lord. Recently, someone asked me to agree in prayer with them for the Lord to do something in their life. I first asked “are you in right standing with the Lord concerning this area of your life?” And it appeared the person was not. So, I said, how can we then agree in prayer for the Lord to do something about it while your own action is contradictory with the Word of God, which expresses God’s will? Praying to pray leads nowhere, if not to frustration and discouragement.
You see, Jesus wants to do something for us today: “I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son” (John 14:13). So why is it everything we ask in Jesus’ name is not granted to us? The answer is then simple: we ask amiss (James 4:3) or when we pray in agreement, there is no spiritual agreement because one or more party in this agreement is not doing what is right before the Lord for the prayer to be effective (James 5:16). For, normally it is ANYTHING two or three ask in the name of Jesus that the Lord should grant us for Hiw own glory! Therefore, it means that if the Lord is not granting, one or more parties are not enabling Him to act.
My friend, Jesus was acting as a man on earth and for His prayers to be effective So, let’s learn to imitate our Lord in all His ways and teachings to live a Christ-like life on earth. Stay blessed in Jesus’ name.
