TODAY’S MEDITATION – Do you keep your promises? (Deuteronomy 23:21)

Procrastination, neglect, ignorance, indifference… so many things can lead us to make void promises to God. The most important thing to notice is that, those who make empty promises to God are also those people who make fake promises to man. My brother, my sister, know that the Bible says: “If you make a vow to the Lord your God, do not be slow to pay it, for the Lord your God will certainly demand it of you and you will be guilty of sin” (Deuteronomy 23:21). If you did not know it, whatever you promised to God is a sin if you did not keep your promise. Similarly, whatever you promised to a man binds you and you owe that person until you give or pay it! Why? Because the Lord wants us to live as His children, learning to become faithful and with integrity because we are made in His image. So we need to understand that it is better not to make promises at all unless we intend to keep them. Why do we sometimes make promises we do not intend to keep? To please others, to show off, to show capacity in a situation where we are actually not skilled enough or incapable… Yet, Jesus this: “All you need to say is simply ‘Yes’ or ‘No’; anything beyond this comes from the evil one” (Matthew 5:37). Why? Because not keeping our promises reveals our a lack of integrity. When you say you will do something and you actually do it, people will trust you and you will surely be considered of high value and integrity. That is what pleases God! When you don’t, people end up seeing your true inside, and that is not pleasing to God, for He reads in all our hearts and imagine He reads sadness in someone’s heart because you promised something to that person and you did not keep you promise! But what people actually think matters less than the consequences of not keeping your promises. Indeed, many people’s lives are blocked without any breakthrough or moving around, just for a promise they never fulfilled before God or man… yet, they keep asking God for a breakthrough! Remember that the Bible says: “How can you say you love God, whom you haven’t seen, if you hate your brother, whom you have seen?” (1 John 4:20). If you love God and neglect Him, do you really love Him? So, it is the same for man that you see! My friend, today, put an end to any sin coming from your procrastination, your negligence, your ignorance or your indifference or your unfaithfulness… those things that can easily lead you to ignore your promises to God or man. The price to pay for such things is too high. Jesus has already redeemed you so don’t bind yourself again into slavery. Today, look into your heart with sincerity, and if you find out that you owe someone something you promised but you never fulfilled that promise, call that person and ask for forgiveness if you still cannot keep your promise, only to be released from any bondage that may have been caused by what the person thinks of you. Similarly, if you promised God something and you did not keep your promise, ask Him to forgive you for being quick in promising to Him, for it is a sin not to cancel these promises… Stay blessed in Jesus’ name.
