TODAY’S MEDITATION – Behind every successful household, there is a virtuous woman (Proverbs 31:10-31)

Globally the books of Proverbs show us how to become wise, make good decisions and live according to God’s idea. Besides, most of them say lots of things about women, and most importantly, this Proverb, which is the last of the book of Proverbs, ends with a picture of a woman of strong character, great wisdom, many skills and great compassion. My brother, my sister, some people have the mistaken idea that the ideal woman in the Bible is retiring, servile and entirely domestic. Read this Proverb and you will see that this woman is an excellent wife and mother, and contrarily to the definition of virtue in our societies, hers come from her qualities: she is hard working, she fears God, has respect for her spouse, she has great foresight, knows how to encourage and care for others, is concerned about the poor and has wisdom in handling money. What a great manufacturer, importer, manager, farmer, seamstress, upholster and merchant! Yes… Her strength and dignity do not come from her amazing achievements, but they are a result of her reverence to God. In today’s societies, physical appearance counts so much, but here this woman’s appearance is never mentioned and the Bible clearly shows that her attractiveness comes from her noble character. My brother, the Bible says that “He who finds a wife finds what is good and receives favor from the Lord.” (Proverbs 18:22) and the greatest command you have received from the Lord is to love your wife like Jesus loves the church. If you want favor in your household my brother, apply what the Word of God is saying. My sister, the woman described in this Proverb could be a composite portrait of ideal womanhood, so it would be difficult for you to imitate her in every detail. However, use her as your inspiration to become or be a mother and a wife according to God’s ideal by learning from her qualities, her integrity and resourcefulness… thus your children will stand and bless you and your husband will praise you (verse 28). Stay blessed in Jesus’ name.
